The 2024 SPECtacular Award Winners
The SPECtacular Award is given to individuals who have significantly exceeded
expectations in their contributions to SPEC.
Technical Leadership
Hansfried Block, Supporting Contributor
Hansfried Block has been a key contributor to the SPECpower and the ISG Server Efficiency Committees since their inception. Despite retiring in 2016, Hansfried continues to contribute to the committees, focusing primarily on the development of the SERT suite and the PTDaemon interface. He contributed to the development of the SERT suite as a release manager and developer, then in 2022 shifted his focus to the next SPECpower benchmark. Still, he diligently trained the new SERT suite release manager and helped guide the SERT 2.0.7 suite release from the background. His contributions to the SPEC PTDaemon interface, including adding a variety of European-based power analyzers, enabled SPEC, TPC, VMWware, and MLCommons to focus on improving performance-per-watt, and he enabled much of the compute server ecosystem to tackle energy efficiency (e.g., via US Energy Star, EU Lot9, Japan Meti).
Dedicated Service
Aaron Cragin, Microsoft
A SPEC board member, Aaron Cragin was involved in many initiatives in 2023, including his ongoing role of assistant treasurer. In this role, Aaron took on the responsibility to help evaluate the financial state of EEMBC during the discovery phase of the recent merger activity between SPEC and EEMBC. He worked tirelessly with EEMBC board representatives and their accountant to ensure all the financial documentation was in order, and he created a spreadsheet overview that was very helpful in determining the initial dues of the new Embedded Group.
Executive Leadership
David Schmidt, Red Hat
Since joining the Board, David Schmidt has stepped up to serve in many key roles, including Inspector of Elections and Awards Chair. In late 2022, when the SPEC and EEMBC Boards explored EEMBC joining SPEC, David managed to keep other Board projects running on life support while quickly and enthusiastically pivoting to Chair of the EEMBC Merger Committee. The SPEC and EEMBC Boards deeply appreciated David's organizational skill and friendly, agreeable leadership, and he successfully led numerous meetings, organized and tracked countless tasks, and assisted in setting up the SPEC member-wide meeting and vote. Thanks in no small part to David's contributions, the EEMBC merger was successful and has created a much stronger-together organization.
